50/60hz, 2018
iron sheets, square tubing, copper coils, two microwave transformers, 2000 W stereo amplifier
230x70x50cm
Created in collaboration with Albert Tarrats, 50/60 Hz takes up R. Murray Schafer’s idea from The Tuning of the World that the world generates a constant whisper through the electronic devices we use. With 60 Hz on one hemisphere and 50 Hz on the other, two microwave transformers are converted into electromagnets and attached to steel sheets that function as loudspeakers, vibrating at their respective frequencies. Standing between the two sheets, one can hear the interference between them, as if suspended in a hot-air balloon in the middle of the Atlantic, listening to the world between two hemispheres.
